Watchdog probes English's housing perks

Published: 12:18PM Friday September 25, 2009 Source: ONE News

The Finance Minister is under scrutiny from New Zealand's chief financial watchdog over his housing allowances.

The office of the Auditor General announced on Friday morning that they would conduct preliminary inquiries into whether Bill English should be claiming an out of town living allowance.

The English family has been based in Wellington for many years but English claims his primary place of residence is Dipton in the heart of his Clutha-Southland electorate.

The Auditor General is gathering background information and will decide in the next two weeks whether to conduct a formal inquiry.
