Police are trying to track down more people involved in a brawl in which a man was stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver at an Auckland service station on Saturday afternoon.
Police were called to the Mobil Service Station on Verran Road, North Shore about 12.20pm after a group of three or four men was confronted by the occupants of three cars.
An argument began, which escalated to the point where one person was stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver or similar item, police say.
A friend of the victim says it was unprovoked.
"We just came to fill up some gas and those guys in the other car came up and thought they'd be Mr Hardballs and try and have a fight with us," says James Solomona.
"One of our friends was walking up, and one of them (attacker) snuck up behind him and stabbed him in the back of the neck," he said.
The incident was witnessed by many shocked bystanders in the North Shore suburb of Birkenhead.
It has left residents wondering what has happened to their quiet neighbourhood.
"It's a big shock. This doesn't happen very often," says one resident.
The man injuries are not life threatening and police have spoken to a number of people, including the two groups caught up in the fight.
They are still looking for others involved in the brawl and say charges are likely.
The investigation will be followed up by the CIB.
