Police are investigating what is being called a suspicious death on a boat at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour.

An inquiry was launched after a 40-year-old man reportedly died on Friday night following the Pacific Hygiene Ltd Christmas party on the luxury yacht Quest II.

Police at the scene say the death of the man, reportedly a friend of a Pacific Hygiene staff member, is being treated as suspicious.

Company director Rodney Downs has told the Herald On Sunday efforts were made to calm the man down after he began acting "a bit funny".

"He sat down in the lounge upstairs and then suddenly bang," he says.

"It was a terrible tragedy. We don't know the cause of death but everyone is shattered."

Police spent much of Saturday speaking to partygoers and examining the boat.
