A gunman has used a pair of scissors to chop off part of a teenage boy's ear in a bizarre robbery attempt on the Gold Coast.

The 16-year-old and his friend, 15, were walking at Varsity Lakes late last night, when a man approached and produced a gun.

The offender ordered the boys to follow him to a nearby jetty and demanded they hand over their belongings.

"The man then used a pair of scissors to cut off the bottom half of the 16-year-old's ear lobe before fleeing the scene," police said.

The boy was treated at Robina Hospital, but his friend was not physically harmed.

The gunman is described as being Pacific Islander in appearance, solid-to-heavy build, about 1.88m tall and having short, black hair.

He was wearing a black shirt, brown three-quarter length shorts and black shoes.
