Strong westerlies gusting 100 km/h in Northland and Auckland, and southerly severe gales in Wellington and Wairarapa. South Island, mainly fine in the west. Rain elsewhere, heavy at times, with snow down to sea level in Otago, Fiordland and Southland, and near sea level in Canterbury and Marlborough. Gale southerlies.

    North Island, showers for most, some heavy. Snow may affect high roads south of Taupo. South Island, mainly fine in the west and north. Showers elsewhere, some heavy, with snow near sea level.

  • Saturday

    North Island, occasional showers for most, but mainly fine in Bay of Plenty. South Island, showers for most, but mainly fine in Nelson and inland Marlborough.

  • Chatham Islands

    Showers, heavier on Friday and Saturday. Southeasterlies, strong at times.
