Canterbury flower growers are looking for alternative countries to ship their flowers to, after a total ban on exports to the United States.

The ban comes after the discovery of the light brown apple moth in flowers grown in the South Island.

Canterbury Fields Flower Wholesalers owner Andrea Blackadder says around 50% of her business goes to North America. She faces huge financial losses.

Blackadder says exporters will eventually find alternative markets but will still suffer because the United States is such a high paying market.

She says a lot of other countries are not prepared to pay that sort of money.
