US high school causes stir with haka

Published: 8:36AM Friday November 23, 2007 Source: Newstalk ZB

The haka has been ruled to be a breach of an Oregon high school football code in the United States.

Jefferson High School has a number of Tongan players on the football team, and decided to perform the routine at the start of their games.

Players, officials and even cheerleaders learnt the haka, but opposing coaches complained to the Oregon high school's activities board which has ruled the haka amounts to taunting.

Jefferson High School is rebelling against the ruling, and will perform the haka anyway. They will face a 15 yard penalty in every game.
