Recognition for sign language

Legislation making sign language an official language has been passed by parliament.

The New Zealand Sign Language Bill will give people the right to use and access sign language in legal proceedings, including court.

Disability Issues Minister Ruth Dyson says it is a monumental achievement for the deaf community, which has been seeking this official recognition for about 20 years.

Act was the only party to oppose the legislation.
