Parents welcome stabbing verdict

Published: 1:04PM Friday March 17, 2006 Source: One News

The parents of a dead Wanganui teenager have welcomed the conviction of the youth who killed their son.

The killer was among a gang of four who went on a violent Guy Fawkes night rampage.

What Donna Travis has believed for the last 15 months was confirmed on Friday - her son Jeremy Frew had been murdered.

"It's all a bit overwhelming at the moment, it's a good result," she said after the verdict was given.

After a three week trial, it took the jury 12 hours to find Rawiri Hatata guilty of murdering 16-year-old Jeremy Frew.

Jeremy Frew had been sitting in his parked car at Castlecliff Beach on Guy Fawkes night 15 months ago, when Hatata plunged a knife into his chest.

Brider and Rio Hartley were both found guilty of the manslaughter of Jeremy Frew. Along with Jordan Aranui, all four were found guilty of stabbing another man in Wanganui's main street that night.

They were also all found guilty of attacking Daniel Gray and breaking his jaw .

The four men have been remanded in custody and will appear for sentence later this month.
