A national initiative to reduce over a million tonnes of organic waste in landfills may be trialled on the potato growing industry in Canterbury.
Crop and Food Research has identified potato growers as the best industry for a trial involving the use of organic compost.
Timaru District Council's Brian Gallagher says Canterbury councils and members of the compost industry have been given the green light to meet with stakeholders in the potato industry.
He says the meeting would look at market development opportunities.
Gallagher says he cannot comment on the economic viability of organic compost until after a trial.
