Pharmac secures fresh sources

Pharmac has secured two fresh suppliers of a crucial heart medicine injection.

Supplies were in doubt after Pharmac refused to agree to the price being asked by drug company AstraZeneca for its Betaloc tablets - and looked for a generic substitute.

AstraZeneca said the tablets were subsidising the injection and it would not sell one without the other.

Supplies of the vitally important jab were due to run out at the end of the month.

However Pharmac says another drug company, Novartis, has pulled out all the stops to source the product for New Zealand.

Pharmac says AstraZeneca has now also agreed to continue supplying the injection.
