New, pink Air NZ uniforms under fire

A stitch hasn't even been sewn yet and Air New Zealand's new uniforms are already under fire.

The airline's latest look is the work of top NZ designer Trelise Cooper.

The national carrier revealed the new uniforms on Saturday, which will be introduced next year at the same time as a new aircraft fleet.

"I knew when I got this it would be contentious and... it's the fashion industry after all so, yes there's been lots of controversy," says Cooper.

All staff get a new look, a strong green pattern for the ground crew, a strong pink pattern for the cabin crew along with a more traditional look for the cabin crew managers.

The new uniforms will gradually be introduced in 2011 to work in with a new interior design for the planes.

"Clearly what we're looking for is a really strong colour palate across the inside of the aircraft relative to what the crew ground staff and pilots are going to be wearing,"  Air New Zealand spokesman Ed Sims says.

"Fun, feminine, innovative, original that's exactly the sort of response we're hoping to get from the crew that they see this as sort of a bold statement."

But that sentiment seems highly unlikely.

One flight attendant lamented the candyfloss pink colour scheme, saying it makes them look like "drag queens".

And it seems that is a view shared by many, with the majority of the cabin crew staff saying they would not choose to wear the twilight pink dress.

This is not the first time the Air NZ uniform design has been attacked.

The current uniforms, by Zambesi, came under fire for their Thunderbird look when they were revealed.

Can I suggest that perhaps most of us don't decide which airline we are going to fly simply because we like the colour or style of uniform they wear? Pink is only one colour in this palette but quite frankly, who cares? As long as they get me where I am going quickly, cost effectively and treat me well then they can wear polka dots and feathers. Air NZ are about people not colour. Why do we waste so much energy on this when there are bigger things going on in the world...

I don't know about culturaly offensive but the uniforms are offensive in just about every other way. I can't actually see any maori stuff on them just something that looks like a cross between vomit and a bad car smash.

Not only are these uniforms UGLY, they also make use of some beautiful, culturally meaningful motifs in a haphazard and disharmonious way. I'm sure these motifs could be more appropriately used on elegant pieces of attire by incorporating them in the style of symmetrical borders which would better reflect the culture and beauty of Aotearoa.

Just the thought of a long haul flight with cabin crew in pink doesn't bear thinking about. Pattern is great, represents NZ but PINK.......Air NZ won't be first choice!

Maybe if we put an "H" in it then certain people in NZ would be happy!!!!
