An unmanned Japanese spacecraft filled with rubbish is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere near New Zealand on Monday.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), 10m long and 4.4m in diameter, was launched from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on September 11 and docked with the International Space Station a week later, the Kyodo newsagency reported.

Having dropped off food, supplies and stratospheric observation equipment needed by Japan's Kibo lab, the spacecraft was loaded with 1.6 tonnes of used equipment and sent to ditch in the ocean east of New Zealand, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said.
