The Vice President Māori of the Council of Trade Unions is thanking Labour and the Māori Party for urging National to make changes to its Employment Standards Legislation bill.

Both parties are claiming that their work sealed the deal to support an amendment to ban zero hour contracts.

But Syd Keepa of the CTU Rūnanga says it’s been a collabrative effort which has caused change which will ultimately benefit young Māori vulnerable to zero hour contracts.

“What they’ve done, both of them, is helped all those workers out there that are in this position, and most of those workers are basically Māori and Pacific Islanders.”
