Steve Irwin, 44,died on September 4, in a freak accident on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

He was killed by a stingray barb which pierced his chest.

The man known as The Crocodile Hunter was comfortable around animals, no matter how dangerous. His enthusiasm and daring made him famous.

The Melbourne-born father of two's Crocodile Hunter programme was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world making a star out of Steve and his wife Terri.

Back in 1993 TVNZ spoke to the daring duo about their wild life and their love for some of the most dangerous animals on the planet.

The related video excerpts capture some of the moments from that early interview.
