Tyler Read's Return

Tyler Read plays Wendy and Murray's son Evan, and this week he's making a return to Ferndale. We had a quick chat about working on the show.

Do you have a favourite moment from your time on Shortland Street?

One of my favourite moments was helping to deliver a baby when Marnie was too unwell to do it. I'm not great with babies so stepping out of my comfort zone was an exciting challenge for me. I had no idea what I was doing!

Which other actors/actresses do you like and why?

I've recently been enjoying watching Tom Hardy. I think the roles he has chosen are awesome and he's exciting to watch. He's a great entertainer.

What's your favourite film?

I love the film The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams. Boxing is my favourite sport but this film focuses on family and relationships and is so much more than just a film about a sport.

What do you enjoy most about acting?

The opportunity to make people feel something - whether it's positive or negative. Both are important. Good theatre/TV/films challenge the way people think, and an actor's ability to invite people to empathise with something their character is experiencing is a gift.

What's the best experience you’ve had with a fan/fans?

The best experiences are when fans tell me they enjoy watching the show. Simple as that. If we can make a show (and have as much fun making it as we do) that entertains people for half an hour every day, what more could you ask for?

What's the strangest experience you've had with a fan/fans?

The strangest experiences I had were when people said to me "oh you're the guy from Shortland Street! I don't watch it, sorry." Like I was gonna be upset or offended or something.. I'm not.

Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?

My first day filming was amazing, everyone made me feel welcome and allowed me to work the way I work. Every day from then on was fun. Often challenging, but always fun.

Were your returning scenes easy or were you just as nervous as the first time you were on set?

I don't think I could call my returning scenes easy, but getting back into the groove of filming. It's like I never left!

Your returning storyline involved some difficult scenes – how was that to film?

The scenes we shot for our return were the kind of scenes you want as an actor, challenging and emotionally demanding. I'm so glad I got to come back and be a part of it.
