Twelve questions with Beulah Koale
Beulah Koale joins Shortland Street as runaway teen Jared Afeaki who the Warner family have taken under their wing.
Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?
Yes, I was super prepared and uptight and made sure that I made no mistakes and did a good job like a robot. Looking back, I’ve learnt that I was over prepared because you need to find the balance between fun and staying professional in this industry.
Do you have any pets?
We’ve had cats but they all ran away, ouch.
Which other character would you like to be and why?
Bella but a boy version because she’s in her own world and she’s always having fun.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Middlemore hospital, and grew up in South Auckland, Otara. Still live here and love it.
How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?
I’ve basically been acting my entire life, because like most Samoans I was raised in church and did White Sunday productions ever since I could talk.
But professionally I’ve been acting for around 4 years. I guess my first big break for me was when I did my first theatre show called Havoc in the Garden with Massive Company.
What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?
In New Zealand I love Ambury Regional Park in Mangere Bridge. It’s one of my happy spots, reminds me of family.
Overseas, I love Australia because heaps of my family live there.
What has been your favourite scene to film in your time at Shortland Street?
Probably all my scenes with Geordie (who plays Phoenix) because he’s my brother from another mother.
How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?
I have 4 younger brothers and 1 beautiful younger sister. She’s gonna be happy i said that, hahaha.
Do you watch Shortland Street at home? If yes, is it strange seeing yourself on television or are you used to it?
Yes, love watching it with my family, we sit around the TV and just laugh at me, and yes its funny seeing myself on TV.
Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?
What’s the best experience you’ve had with a fan/fans?
When kids from my church run up to me and tell me they saw me on Shortland Street. They get so excited and forget that I’m still Beulah Koale who has known them their entire lives.
What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work every day?
I love that I get a chance to act every day and kick it with awesome people.
