Get to know Luanne Gordon

Luanne plays Kylie's glamorous mother Norelle. Find out a little more about her here!

Where did you grow up?

Kapiti Coast

How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?

I've been acting since I was six years old. I was the youngest member of Kapiti  Players Little Theatre. After me - probably because of me - they refused to accept anyone that young. I remember the first show I did with them I wore my brand new red patent leather buckled shoes that Mum had bought me that day. I was meant to be playing a refugee, so should have had dirty bare feet. I don't imagine the director was very impressed with my debut performance, but there is no doubt I was thrilled to show off my new shoes.

Name three similarities between you and your onscreen character.

Umm… looks, age, back pain…

What has been your best experience/scene on the show to date?

Not easy to answer.  Norelle's storyline is so good. Every actor likes to get something meaty to sink their teeth into and this role is a succulent juicy steak, so many lovely scenes I can't pick a favourite.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of SS?

I spend a lot of time walking my wee hound, Piper, and I love it. We're either at a west coast beach or hiking through the bush. It lifts my spirits.

And then of course there's the usual: cinema, reading and writing.

I have also developed a skill for relaxing over the past few years, and I love it. I used to feel like I had to be busy all the time, but not any more.

What do you do in your down time during the day when you’re not shooting?

This varies depending on what else I have going on, but see above. And of course line learning takes up a good amount of down time.

What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?

I love the ocean and am pretty happy to be on any NZ coastline, but right now I'm enjoying hanging out at Piha. My favourite city is Barcelona.

How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?

I have two brothers that I don't see enough. I'm in the middle.

What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?

I was born August 2nd which makes me a Leo.

Do you have any pets?

My best buddy, Piper. She's a schnauzer cross fox terrier.

Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire the most?

How long have you got? There are so many. They include the obvious international movie stars, and some of our very own. I still giggle when I think of Kura Forrester's performance in The Adventures of Suzy Boon. I am constantly seeing talent to admire.

What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work everyday?

First and foremost, just grateful for the work! But I also love the unpredictable nature of what we do. I love that feeling I get when I know that everyone in the room is invested in the scene. It's an energy that's not always present, but when it is it's magic.

What has been your favorite scene to film in your time at Shortland Street?

There is this one scene we haven't shot yet, but when I read it my heart breaks. I’m really looking forward to shooting it. I hope it lives up to my expectations and is as good on the day as it deserves to be.

What is your favourite food?

Peanut butter, chocolate, cheese and bread – all the good stuff

What is your favourite television programme and/or film of all time?

Are you from Auckland or did you move her to film Shortland Street? Where did you grow up?

I’m a Wellingtonian. I moved to Auckland in 2004 for a couple of years before scarpering off to the UK for several more.  I have been back living in Auckland since the end of 2012.

Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?

I like working with actors who are playful. There's no thought to outcome. Simply being in the moment, emotions and impulses bouncing off each other with the dexterity of a charged tennis match. You can't do that on your own, you need a good teammate.

Have you made any good friends among the cast and crew?

The cast and crew on this show is top brass! It's a wonderful environment to walk into and you feel like everyone has your back.
