Get to know Duane Evans Jr.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Auckland.
How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?
Acting for seven years since I was three years old, I was cast as the lead in my first commercial.
Name three similarities between you and your onscreen character.
- we both like sports
- we both have the coolest dads
- we both love donuts
Which other character would you like to be and why?
It's hard to say because I’m enjoying being Michael, he’s so different to me, he gets up to the kind of mischief that I never would – like stealing Nicole’s keys and poking tongues at Leanne – so funny. He also just speaks his mind without worrying about what people think. I’m a bit more quiet than him and I’ve never yelled at my parents or any adult, it’s a strange feeling having to yell at Vinnie. Every time I do it – I almost want to apologise - haha
What are your hobbies/interests outside of SS?
I Love all competitive sports- running, swimming, video games, kapahaka, singing, watching a good action movie or a thriller.
What do you do in your down time during the day when you’re not shooting?
Go into the actors lounge and have a good time playing games on the PS3 until my mum kills it and makes me run lines for the next scenes. Or else I’m at school when I’m away from set.
How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?
I have five siblings – so six of us in total. Four boys and two girls, and I’m number four. I have two brothers and a sister who are older and I have a younger brother and baby sister who is three years old.
What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?
My birth date is the 5th of September, 2003.
Do you have any pets?
We have a dog which is actually my brother Kenji’s dog called Kora.
What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work everyday?
Messing around with Pua (my onscreen dad) - he’s soooo much fun.
Acting is fun – I love it and I like meeting all the other cast and crew and getting to know them.
What is your favourite television programme and/or film of all time?
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - with ‘the Rock’.
Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?
Pua is awesome - I love working with him, he’s so easy to act with and easy going. He is a really great actor and I’m learning heaps from him. I love all the women that I have scenes with- Sally, Frankie, Teuila, Ria…and my onscreen mum Liesha. They are so great to me, very kind and treat me like family. Renee is always really cool too.
I’m getting to know all of the other actors too and they are all the nicest people, it is like a family on the set.
Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?
Yup I remember being really nervous because I had to do a really emotional scene and I wanted to make sure I got it right. The director Ian made me feel really comfortable and so did Pua. I think I got it right because my contract got extended lol.
