Amelia’s Important Cause

Amelia Reid from Shortland Street

Actress Amelia Reid (Bella Durville) has set herself a goal to run a half marathon in a month’s time – all in order to raise funds for a very good cause.

Amelia’s putting on her running shoes and has taken up pounding the pavement in order to participate in the 2014 Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon which is helping raise awareness and funds to support the organisation that supports people with bowel cancer.

Beat Bowel Cancer Aotearoa is committed to reducing the impact of bowel cancer on our community through awareness, education and support. 1200 New Zealanders die from bowel cancer every year — more than breast and prostate cancer combined and it’s a cause that Amelia holds dear to her heart.

“I’ve had a very close family member go through bowel cancer so I am very aware of the nature of the disease,” says Amelia. “Thankfully, they managed to beat the battle but as I’ve learnt more about the disease and its terrible toll, I decided I wanted to do whatever I can to help. It’s a terrible cancer and one that isn’t widely discussed, so I am super keen to raise both money and awareness.”

On May 10th, 2900 people from Invercargill to Whangarei will challenge themselves and each other through the beautiful vineyards of Marlborough as they run 21.1km.

Amelia’s looking forward to the challenge.

“I’ve never run more than 7km’s in my life so it’s a little bit scary!” she says. “But I’m really looking forward to building up my stamina and increasing my fitness level. I’m going to be very proud of myself if I can make it to the finish line!”
