What to Consider Before You Get a New Dog

There are many things you need to consider before adopting a new dog. It's a very exciting time and good planning will ensure a smooth transition and the chance to establish a healthy bond right away. Think about:

  • the basic care and training you'll need to provide
  • how to prepare your home to be a comfortable and safe place for your new dog
  • what toys and supplies you need
  • how much time will you need to set aside for training, exercise, attention & love
  • establish family roles who feeds, trains and walks the dog
  • plan for costs: food, registration, vet care, fencing, kennel, bedding, toys, holiday, boarding etc
  • ensure your section is fully fenced
  • decide which type of dog is best for you

What Do Dogs Need to Thrive?

Dogs, just like humans, have complex nutritional needs. One common misconception is that dogs are carnivores. The reality is that even their wolf ancestors ate only 70% meat. Today's dogs are omnivores, built to consume a more balanced diet and that's a good thing. Depending on the breed, dogs can live twice as long as wolves.

Choosing the Right Dog Food

When choosing a food for your pet, it's important to consider many factors, from your dog's age to their size to any special dietary needs they might have, like weight management or sensitivities.

General Training

Successful dog training is based on reward. Be consistent and remember that dogs only understand immediate consequences. You have a 3 second window to reward or correct behaviours; outside of that time any reward or punishment will have little effect.
