Act MP David Garrett's explanation of the lewd remark he made to a woman staff member has landed him in hot water with the Tongan Law Society.

Garrett suggested that what he said may not be acceptable here but was okay at his Tongan law firm.

But that has now provoked action.

Garrett is a first term MP attracting attention for all the wrong reasons.

He has already had to apologise for making a lewd comment to an Act Party staff member.

But it's this comment excusing the behaviour that's landed him in hot water: "I've realised that what is acceptable in a law firm in Tonga might not be acceptable in parliament," he said.

That has angered the Tongan legal community and some members of the government. And one promiment lawyer has already made official complaints with New Zealand's High Commissioner in Tonga and with Act leader Rodney Hide.

Garrett was at a law and order select committee on Wednesday. He's a lawyer by trade with a legal practice in Tonga.

But on Thursday a meeting will be held in Tonga by the Law Society's executive committee to try to decide what action to take against the Act MP.

It's understood Act leader Rodney Hide is furious with his first term MP. Best known for pushing the three strikes and you're out law, Garrett now appears to using up his chances early in his political life.
