Nick Willis has confirmed he is out of the track and field world championships in Berlin late next month.
Willis had intended to run the 800 metres as he recovers from hip surgery in April.
He and coach Ron Warhurst believe it is now better to wait until next season and build up to the Commonwealth Games.
The Olympic bronze medallist says although things have been going well he doesn't want to take unnecessary risks.
He says he's getting fit but wouldn't be able to put in the really intense training which would mean a mediocre showing at the world championships.
Nick Willis is back running up to an hour a day, five days a week.
He says he may attempt to defend his Fifth Avenue mile in New York later in the year.
