Forecasters are warning of a high risk of thunderstorms in Auckland and northern and western parts of the North Island today.
The storms are expected to strike Northland, Auckland and western Waikato this afternoon and evening, bringing heavy rain, hail, strong winds and even a chance of small tornadoes.

The storms are being caused by a series of pressure troughs moving over central and northern New Zealand as temperatures in the upper atmosphere gradually cool.
Western Waitomo, north Taranaki, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty are expected to experience the thunderstorms later tonight.
