An investigation is underway after a German-themed party by Lincoln University students.

Students dressed as Nazis and concentration camp inmates for the Oktoberfest party, organised by one of the university's halls of residence, on Friday night.

Costumes featured slogans such as "Sieg Heil!" and "Hitler's my boi" and one guest was seen wearing a white top with swastikas.

One student said partygoers "were heiling to Hitler and making tasteless jokes about one of the darkest periods of human history".

Lincoln vice-chancellor Roger Field said the university would investigate what happened at the party.

"If some of the claims that have been made are correct, then I think some of the behaviour seems to be quite unacceptable," he said.

Lincoln University Students Association president Megan Harte says the student's  actions were tasteless and inappropriate.

Harte says Lincoln University is not a racist place and that the behaviour is not symbolic of what happens on campus.

She says she's embarrassed for the students who wore the costumes, but that it's more of an issue around education and acceptability rather than the students expressing any racist tenancies.

Miss Harte says most of these students are 18 to 19-years-old, and they don't necessarily know the symbolic nature of what they've done.

She says the matter is now being dealt with by the halls of residence.

What do you think of the students dressing up as Nazis and concentration camp inmates? Is it acceptable or have they gone too far? Have your say on our messageboard below.

Im an Indian student here in Christchurch and I welcome anyone who wishes to throw a racial or ethnic slur towards me. We have racial slurs in our native languages and Ill probably use one on you. So what if Im bloody offended by what you say. The freedom of speech must and should include the right to "hate" speech. Only then can we know who the real culprits are and be able to ridicule their ideas and prejudices and shame them into changing their minds.

The last bastion of political correctness! We live in a country that would not grant a PhD graduate a visa to visit here and speak, because he believed the numbers quoted for the holocaust were not accurate. He was labelled a 'holocaust denier' and banned from our country. He was censored, ironically a feature of the Nazi regime. In this country this sort of behaviour will always be condemned, regardless of intent.

I can't believe how out of proportion this has been blown. I myself was at the party, and the idea of the party was to experience a glimpse into German culture. For the media to say it was a "pro-nazi" party is ridiculous. We had specifically been told not to wear inappropriate dress, and only a handful of students decided to ignore this. It would not be on the news had one or two people not gone to the media, as it was a well controlled and overall excellent night enjoyed by most who attended.
