Retailers are breathing a sign of relief after a ban on tobacco displays has been effectively ruled out by the Government.
Prime Minister John Key says there is no evidence to suggest banning displays works.
Association of Convenience Stores chairman Roger Bull is welcoming the Government's stance, saying the cost of banning displays would be huge.
He estimates it would cost each retailer $6,000 to make the necessary changes.
Bull says imposing significant costs on retailers in these economic times would be unfair.
