Police have arrested a 17-year-old foreign student after a teacher was stabbed in front of a class of 25 horrified students at Auckland's Avondale college.

It's understood, the 50-year-old teacher had his back to the class and was writing on the white board when an international student allegedly stabbed him.

The student then fled the school.

Police rushed to the college in west Auckland after reports that a male teacher was stabbed at 11:42am.

About an hour later, police located and arrested the international student at a Blockhouse Bay address.

An associate of the boy was also located at the address and is assisting police with the investigation.

St John's Ambulance has confirmed a 50-year-old was transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.

The teacher has been named as David Warren and he is said to be in a stable condition.

A classroom at the college was cordoned off as a crime scene and police have been speaking with witnesses.

The college principal, Brent Lewis, says the youth arrested is a 17-year-old Korean international student who had only been at the school for a matter of weeks.

"We're not sure what lay behind it or what the circumstances were. The students who were present are with the counsellors and with the police at present," says Lewis.

Lewis says the incident is not the type of thing they have seen before at Avondale College.

"Such an aberration and such a bizarre incident I think it's out of the ordinary. But obviously well review everything once the incident is fully complete."
