Police release identikit photograph of Nelson rapist

Published: 6:06PM Friday January 04, 2013 Source: ONE News

Nelson police are still on the hunt for a man who violently attacked and raped a woman gardening at a community centre.

The 62-year-old has been in hospital with substantial head and facial injuries since the incident which occurred on Tuesday.

The offender is described as a dark-skinned male, possibly Maori or Polynesian, in his early 20s with short hair.

His left arm is tattooed from the shoulder to the wrist in a Maori or tribal design. His right arm is tattooed from the shoulder to the elbow.

Police are maintaining high profile patrols in the area and have released an identikit photograph of the offender.

They say the man is dangerous and urge the public to avoid walking at the Victory Community Gardens area alone.

Tomorrow police will have a stand at the Saturday market in Montgomery Square in Nelson where people can come and offer information.

A freephone number has also been set up for people to call with information. That number is 0508 2674662 or 0508 CORINNA.
