A search has continued through the night for a tramper missing in the Tararua Forest Park near Masterton.

Police say the 29-year-old Chilean tourist became disoriented in the vicinity of Mount Holdsworth.

He had gone to Mt Holdsworth for a day hike and lost the track on his return journey to Holdsworth Lodge.

He alerted authorities to his predicament by cellphone and was not equipped for an overnight stay in the forest park, police say.

A helicopter search could not reach the area where he is believed to be due to low cloud.

Five volunteer search teams were deployed to the area overnight.

Weather conditions are mild but the missing tourist is believed to be in the sub alpine zone and below the bush edge.

It is hoped cloud conditions will improve this morning.
