The teachers union says statistics show New Zealand teachers face similar risks to police officers of getting badly assaulted.
During the last school year 442 teachers were given ACC compensation after being assaulted at school while for the same period 514 police officers needed medical attention.
New Zealand Educational Institute president Frances Nelson says it is a shameful statistic.
Nelson says more intervention is needed as the sector has already been impacted by a murder.
She says NZEI can't do it alone and the government needs to act more strongly with them.
