Minister confident NIWA sacking right move

The minister in charge of NIWA is confident the Crown-owned entity has made the right decision in sacking world-respected scientist Jim Salinger.

The Nobel Laureate has lost his job, supposedly because he talked to the media without approval.

Opposition parties are urging Research Minister Wayne Mapp to intervene in the dismissal.

But he says it's a matter for the NIWA board to handle.

Mapp says he was made aware of the sacking before it was announced last Friday.
