The man accused of murdering Auckland hairdresser Marie Jamieson eight years ago has been committed to stand trial.

Joseph Martin Reekers, 51, was charged in June last year with the rape and murder of 23-year-old Jamieson.

Her body was found behind a factory in Ranui, West Auckland, on February 9, 2001.

The sickness beneficiary was arrested in Kaitaia shortly after police took DNA samples from two men last year.

A two-day depositions hearing was due to start in Waitakere District Court on Thursday but Reekers' lawyer Chris Comeskey agreed there was a prima facie case against him.

Reekers, who denies the charge, will appear in the High Court at Auckland for a callover in April.

His trial was expected to be next year.
