Police have named the man who was killed in a quad bike accident on Foxton Beach, west of Palmerston North.

Luke James Randle, 20, died yesterday morning near the end of Parewanui Road.

A group of four-five people had gone out fishing, and were returning along the beach at around 1.30am.

Randle and a 20-year-old friend were on the quad bike, which struck a piece of drift wood.

Both passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Randle, the rider, died at the scene and his male friend was transported to Palmerston North hospital with head injuries.

The rest of the group were travelling in a four-wheel drive, and came upon the quad-bike riders several minutes after the accident.

Police have not confirmed whether alcohol was involved.
