Act's sole MP, John Banks, has been announced as the party's new leader.
The Act Party has not had a leader since Don Brash resigned on election night after he failed to gain a seat in Parliament.
Party president Chris Simmons announced the appointment in Parliament today, where he said the board's decision had been unanimous.
He said Banks was a logical choice for leader given he is the only member of the Act Party who is in Parliament.
Banks won the Epsom electorate with 44% of the vote earlier this year, while the party received only 1.07% of the party vote.
Banks said he was honoured to accept the leadership and is focused on ensuring the party's success in the 2014 election, despite never having any previous aspirations to fill the position.
"I've come to the leadership of the Act Party reluctantly, given that I'm here on my own.
"I was never breaking my neck to be leader of the Act Party."
Banks said he wanted to ensure the Epsom electorate would stay faithful to the Act Party after National gained significant ground in the electorate during the last election.
