It sounds like the haka and looks like the All Blacks, but a Japanese TV ad for Coca Cola has rugby officials and iwi chiefs back home in a fizz.

The ad, starring Japanese pop sensation Namie Amurohas, has come under fire from the New Zealand Rugby Union for imitating its brand, and Ngati Toa for using what sounds a bit like its haka, Ka Mate.

The NZRU has been in talks directly with Coca Cola Japan about the issue on Monday and will not comment further on the matter.

Matiu Rei of Ngati Toa, who has also taken issue with the ad, says it is highly derogatory of the haka, Maori cultural practice and the language.

He told TVNZ 7 News at 8 that even though the ad is not Ka Mate per se, it leaves you with the understanding that it probably is, and as far as the Japanese audience is concerned it probably is Ka Mate.
