A 75-year-old man has collapsed and died while hunting in Fiordland's Hollyford Valley.
The man was hunting with a teenager who raised the alarm after navigating through thick forest back to Gunns Camp.
A helicopter was dispatched from Te Anau with a doctor and police search and rescue personnel, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said his death was not suspicious and his body was taken out by the helicopter.
Sergeant Tod Hollebon of Te Anau police said that the man's young companion did a very good job marking a trail out to the road and assisting the search and rescue effort. He also thanked the other members of the public who also helped at the scene.
The deceased man's name will not be released until family members have been advised.
