The head of Otago University Students' Association is being urged to resign after abusing ACT MP Sir Roger Douglas on Facebook.

Logan Edgar's tirade on the 73-year-old's wall was sparked by the debate over making student unions voluntary.

The post uses obscene language and describes Douglas as a dinosaur who is trying to leave a legacy because he knows he is getting too old.

ACT on Campus President Peter McCaffrey says the expletive-laden post is offensive and inappropriate for someone who is representing students.

He says unfortunately Otago students cannot force their president to resign because a change to the constitution last year means he has to do so voluntarily.

Edgar is also encouraging students to rip up posters of another ACT MP, Heather Roy, who is sponsoring the VSM bill.
