Conservative leader says gay marriage 'not right'

Published: 2:13PM Friday July 27, 2012 Source: ONE News

Conservative leader Colin Craig is causing a storm on Twitter by saying that gay relationships are not normal.

This morning Craig tweeted that: "It's just not intelligent to pretend that homosexual relationships are normal," in response to Louisa Wall's Marriage Amendment Bill being drawn from the ballot in Parliament yesterday.

Now trending on New Zealand Twitter feeds, Craig said "it is important that marriage remains between a man and a woman".

"A tiny minority want to change the rules of the game to suit themselves, and that isn't right," he said.

"It's time for all New Zealanders who recognise the importance of marriage being between a man and a woman to stand up and be heard, because our Parliamentarians lack the backbone to do it," he said.

Craig is not a member of parliament.

MPs are considering their position on the issue of gay marriage which will soon have a first reading in Parliament.

Yesterday, Labour MP Louisa Wall said she is confident that her bill will get the numbers it needs for its first reading.

It needs support from 61 MPs to pass, with 42 currently supporting it, until at least the first reading, according to a poll conducted by TV ONE's Close Up.

Wall says the numbers represent a growing wave of international support for gay rights.

The bill is likely to go to the select committee for public submissions before going on to a conscience vote in Parliament.

The result is expected as early as September.

Colin is not Way out he just wants to stop the stupidity of the path the labour party and the greens are trying to push us down. The gays got civil union, now they want gay marriage next they'll make it compulsory. Mark my words...

I thought that marriage was meant to be between two people who love each-other no matter what their race or gender is, obviously this man has a hidden agenda and that is to have his 15mins of fame.

I've studied psychology for the last 3 years, this includes child developmental psychology. I have to date seen no such evidence that homosexual relationships impact negatively on families. Your religious text is worth nothing next to empirical evidence - Don't forget that. I will not be tolerant of a religion that is clearly intolerant of others.

His views are largely irrelevant as he is not a member of parliament, just those of a narrow minded bigot who does not represent the majority view.
