Episode 7: Keith And Marion Wellington

Keith and Marion Wellington have raised their six children in Waitara. They believe in this small Taranaki town and do much voluntary work to keep it alive. Marion helped establish a local genealogy group which now serves a much wider catchment than just the local community. In fact the group has grown so much that it precipitated the opening of a Waitara Public Relations office which the genealogy group is part of. The Public Relations office also serves as a place for locals to come if they had problems and Marion can send them to the appropriate social agency.

Until recently Keith was doing voluntary work at the local second hand book shop but due to ill health had to give it up. He now helps Marion with all her work and together they do around 100 hours a week for their community. Both Marion and Keith are disabled. Marion has spent years working for the disabled and this year was awarded a Queens Service Medal for her work to the community.

Marion had mentioned that they both would love a garden which was tranquil but easy to look after and this inspired our landscape designer, Richard Greenwood, to design a Japanese garden with a native twist. A boardwalk was built down the side of the house, but unlike most boardwalks which are raised from the ground, this was flush with ground for ease of walking for Marion and Keith.

The boardwalk leads toward a pond at the back door. And over looking the pond is a pagoda which Marion and Keith can sit in. Richard has used native plants in the garden replacing the traditional Japanese plants for suitable indigenous varieties. And at the front of the house a special garden was created to house the Wellington's kiwiana collection.
