Karyn on life after MasterChef NZ
Karyn Fisk was evicted from MasterChef NZ in Week 9 when the Black Team won the challenge.
How have you been since being on MasterChef?
It's been pretty strange, living in limbo waiting for the show to start but also trying to come down off the high that MasterChef gave you - it was so intense. Other than that I have been enjoying being with my little family, having my man to hold at night again (after a hard day of Masterchef all you wanted was your loved ones), playing with my son and loving watching him grow.
Has your life changed?
I get recognised when doing my grocery shopping and it's so bizarre. The show has also really helped me work out what direction I want to go with within the food industry.
What do you think you've learned from the MasterChef
I learnt I could cook, I knew I could make dinner. It's what I do, but to know that I could cook and professionals could see potential in me blew my mind.
What surprised you most about the experience?
When I was the Blue team leader at the Langham, I had no idea that I could lead a team to such an awesome victory, I'm not to sure what the judges thought, but it really astounded me that I pulled it off and I think the other contestants, especially Nigel, were also a little shocked.
What have you learned from being on the show?
That TV really does add ten pounds and more!!! That cameras can be really zoomed in on you, but you have no idea. To always wear your glasses in the pantry, but take them off before you open the oven. That aprons are forgiving when you need to go for a run. Always check the season and taste, think, taste think, and then taste and think again.
Have you stayed in touch with the rest of the
All of the top twelve have been emailing and facebooking each other regularly. It's crazy, we go through this amazing bizarre experience together and then are separated. No one can understand exactly what it was like for us, so we have this strange Masterchef 'bond' - I guess that keeps us connected.
Which recipe from the other contestants have you tried
I haven't really had the chance to make anyone else dishes yet, still juggling mine and Jamie's dinner and making baby food for Noah. Rather I have been working on perfecting my own dishes from the show, also been doing a fair bit of Chinese, which Jamie really loves.
What advice would you give to budding MasterChefs?
Get kids in the kitchen - I started cooking as a child and now am confident in the kitchen. There are too many people my age who cant cook their own meals without opening 2min noodles, but fear not, it's not too late. If you ever want to do MasterChef be really orgainised with your time and know your basics.
What was the best piece of advice given to you by a
judge? (And which judge was it)
We were giving so many little gems of advice and it's hard to say what was the best piece, but over all it was 'be clean, be orgainised' and that was from all three judges and any guest judges.
What's next for you?
Other than my daily motherly duties, I am hoping to get a start on my cookbook for everyday families and start planning for hopefully, one day, to have my own show. But while starting my book, we will be getting ready for our second child due in September.
