Cake challenge sees one MasterChef contestant gone burger
Chef Mathew Metcalfe's latest MasterChef New Zealand challenge has seen one more contestant fall by the way side.
Dave McKinnon, from Christchurch, fell foul to the
cake challenge with judge Ray McVinnie telling him that his
attempt at the burger cake wasn't "something we want to
We caught up with Dave, as he got ready to end his MasterChef journey which started with him taking the Golden Apron in the auditions.
1) How have you found the whole MasterChef
Life changing. I'm motivated to push myself into new ventures - I have lost weight and feel fantastic and my cooking has improved!
2) How did it feel when the judges gave you that
initial apron and then a chance to be part of the final 16?
Excited, nervous, anxious, happy, proud, embarrassed - all of those emotions at the same time. It was a pleasure to see them enjoying my food.
3) How did you feel when you were told to leave the
I have to admit to being perplexed. I was confident that the components in the challenge weren't as bad as my competitors. I really wanted to go further, but accepted the happy ending.
4) How have your friends and family reacted?
Everyone wants me to cook my Golden Apron dish. I can't blame them for wanting to taste perfection!
5) What have you learned most from the
My BBQ spring lamb. Every component was fresh and was exactly how I wanted it to be.
6) What have you learned most from the experience?
Being a good guy in new situations can develop friends for life.
7) What would you have changed about the challenge
which led to your eviction?
I would have made my cakes a different shape like the others, rather than exactly like the original. I would have also positioned the dowel so Ray would have got all the layers when he cut it.
8) Fill in the gap: the kitchen utensil I look like
the most is...
A wooden pastry brush.
9) What's next for you?
I'm going to put up a website to show Kiwis that losing 10kg is easy when you have the right food and recipes; and that making a lifestyle change for better health should be a priority.
