Bill (Willie) Henry Apiata VC - Te Kaha
On the 28th of July 2007, Corporal Willie Apiata VC joined the ranks of William Rhodes-Moorehouse VC and Te Moana-nui-a-kiwa Ngarimu VC to become the 3rd Mäori in history to receive a Victoria Cross.
This week on Marae Arana Taumata will be reporting "Live from Te Kaha" to share with us the celebrations of this War hero.
Mäori Youth Offending
Seven years ago in October 2000 a report was written by Te Puni Kokiri or the ministry of Mäori development on Mäori youth offending.
The report said there was a lack of programmes to deal with the range of factors contributing to Mäori offending and said the government and Mäori needed to work together to develop a range of appropriate services and programmes.
Earlier this week the Ministry of Justice released figures that showed a 39 percent rise in violent youth crimes - approximately half of which were committed by Mäori.
So seven years down the track - has anything really changed? Have the issues that were identified in 2000 been addressed and if so, why do we see an increase in violent youth crime?
Expanding the Rotorua Regional Airport is causing a rift between local council and Te Arawa hapü, Ngäti Uenukukopako. Airport neighbours and the hapü are upset they've had no input into recent developments.
In support of the Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata, we present an item from Te Whänau-a-Apanui, amongst whom Willie was raised. This entry is from the 1998 Wellington Aotearoa Mäori Performing Arts Festival and is titled "Tauira Waka".
