Book review: Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed

Published: 2:03PM Tuesday July 03, 2012

The hype round the sexy bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey just won't go away with women everywhere wanting to get a piece of author EL James' hit novel.

With a film adaption in the works, internet speculation is rife over who will play the role of Christian Grey, with Hollywood hunks Ryan Gosling, Alexander Skarsgard and The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder suggested for the smouldering anti-hero, and Twilight's Kristen Stewart among the brunette actresses being lined up for virginal Anastasia Steele.

Luckily for those who can't wait until the film, Christian and Ana's story continues in Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Story continues below...

Fifty Shades Darker sees the passionate pair separated after Ana has broken off their "arrangement," daunted by Christian's dark desires.  But as she starts a new career with a US publishing house, Ana can't help but be drawn back into Christian's world.

It's probably not too much of a spoiler to reveal that by the third novel Fifty Shades Freed, Ana and Christian are reunited and with a new understanding in their relationship. But as they try to forge a life together, there are secrets from Christian's past that threaten to take them both down.

But enough about the plot already, get to the raunchy stuff!

Like the first book, both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are full to the brim with Christian and Ana's steamy antics that are sure to warm you up on these cold winter nights.

However, can there be such a thing as too much of a good thing? I have to confess by the third book the sex scenes started to get, dare I say it, a little boring.

With any romance, it's the obstacles in the couple's way that make for a good story and personally there's wasn't quite enough for me story-wise to keep things interesting between those titillating sex scenes.

That said, the Fifty Shades sequels are a light and diverting bedtime read and if it's not intellectual stimulation you're after, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are sure to satisfy.

For those who can't get enough of the Fifty Shades trilogy, we have five sets of all three books - Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed - to giveaway.
