Air Dry Clay

This ‘no bake clay’ recipe is perfect for making almost anything.  No mess, no fuss, no kiln, just shape and model and leave to dry.

Dries to a nice crisp light almost stone texture with just a little shrinkage...

Make and decorate as desired.

NO COOK VERSION:

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups potato starch
  • 1 cup PVA glue
  • 2 tbsp baby oil or similar
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar

Method:

Into a bowl add starch

Glue, oil and vinegar and mix until it starts to come together.  It will be sticky.

Pour onto a board covered in starch and start kneading until it is nice and smooth.

Wrap in Gladwrap and store in a screw top jar.

COOKING VERSION:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup corn starch
  • 1 tbsp baby oil
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 cup white PVA glue

Method:

Put into a pot and stir over medium heat stirring for about 5 minutes.

When it forms a ball, use oil on your hands and place on a work surface and knead until nice and smooth.

Line the inside of a sandwich bag with oil, then place clay and seal.

Seal in another plastic lidded container to thus keep the air out.

Once made leave overnight before working…

Xmas Decorations

You will need:

  • Pre-made clay as demonstrated yesterday
  • Baking paper
  • Potato starch
  • Rolling pin
  • Wide needle or nail to make hole for hanging ribbon
  • Ribbon/jute or cord for hanger
  • Cookie cutters
  • Cookie embellishing stamp set (I got mine from Spotlight)
  • Acrylic paint and brushes (to paint completed decorations)

Method –

Roll out clay to just over ½ cm thick.

Dust cutter in a little potato starch then press down onto clay.  Gently left away surplus clay.

Stamp/embellish face of created Christmas decoration.

Allow to dry in a warm place.  Drying time will be determined by thickness of clay.  Mine took several days before they were ready.

Paint the dry decorations if you like or embellish with glitter or sequins.

Thread cord or ribbon through dry decoration and hang…

Happy Christmas crafting…
