As it happened: Wellington Phoenix v Western Sydney Wanderers

Published: 4:04PM Sunday January 13, 2013 Source: ONE Sport/AAP

Fulltime - Phoenix 0-2 Wanderers
The wheels certainly fell of the Phoenix's wagon in the second period.

The hosts were outplayed in every facet of the game by a hungrier Wanderers side. They harrassed, pestered and pressured the hosts into errors and showed a confidence with the ball that the men in yellow lacked.

The Phoenix never looked threatening - the brief period where the match took on a real edge after fouls on Louis Fenton and Vince Lia's challenge on Aaron Mooy failed to spark any kind of enthusiasm or resistance.

Ricki Herbert's troops now face an anxious wait for the result of Sydney FC's clash with the Melbourne Heart later tonight. Should Sydney FC win the Phoenix will be consigned to last place on the competition ladder.

A bleak day overall in Wellington.

Tune in again next saturday for more live updates from the Phoenix's clash with Sydney FC from 7.30pm.

88mins Phoenix 0-2 Wanderers
Shinji Ono nearly works another goal after some great exchanges down the middle of the pitch. The Wanderers eventually get a shot away but it is wide to the right.

82mins Phoenix 0-2 Wanderers
GOAL! Labinot Haliti scores after Ben Sigmund was caught in two minds on the edge of the area. The Wanderers cleverly kept the ball in play with Sigmund isolated. Summing up the host's second-half effort they looked disorganised as Haliti sent in the match winner.

77mins Phoenix 0-1 Wanderers
Wanderers Shinji Ono and Mark Bridge work a clever move with the latter getting a shot away but Mark Paston had its measure and saves the day.

76mins Phoenix 0-1 Wanderers
The Phoenix are not playing with any confidence and doing a lot of chasing. They must hold the ball if they have any hope of climbing back into the game.

71mins Phoenix 0-1 Wanderers
GOAL!  The ball is pushed into the area with Wanderers getting in front of defenders - Nikolai Topor-Stanley sending a diving header into the net. The Wanderers are dominating the midfield area and the Phoenix are handing possession over time and time again.

70mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Vince Lia is also carded for dragging down Aaron Mooy as tempers threaten to boil over once more.

66mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Louis Fenton is fouled in the back - should be a free kick. The frustration showing with Dani Sanchez rushing in to earn a yellow card. The crowd and Phoenix players are clearly annoyed by the referee's lack of action. Can they fire up and break the visitors second-half stranglehold?

63mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Tony Lochhead conceded a tripping foul.

61mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Paston punches the ball clear from a Wanderers corner. The Phoenix have coughed up possession twice now to gift the visitors chances at goal. They are looking like the architects of their own demise here.

59mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
The Phoenix turn the ball over inside their half with Wanderers' Iacopo La Rocca taking a shot from outside the area - his attempt sailed high and wide to the jeers of the Yellow Fever contingent in the stands.

54mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Wanderers' Mark Bridge strikes from the edge of the area off the half volley but it falls straight into Paston's arms.

49mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Stein Huysegems found open spaces and raced down the left sideline before a great tackle from Michael Beauchamp brought things undone.

46mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
The Wanderers get the second-half underway. There is a strong northerly wind that has picked up bringing with it the chance of rain making an unwanted appearance at Westpac Stadium.

Halftime - Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
A grinding first half with both sides failing to capitalise on their few scoring chances.

The Phoenix should feel the most frustrated after seeing three shots from Stein Huysegems and two from Vince Lia all amount to nothing - the former particularly disappointing with two attempts from right in front.

A dour affair but neither of these teams can be considered among the A-League's entertainers. Matches where the Wanderers play away are reputed to be the lowest scoring in the competition so fans should not be expecting a goal-fest.

Plenty of combative action from both sides however - stay tuned for the second half to see who can emerge with three competition points.

43mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Vince Lia launches another strike from outside the box but Wanderers keeper Ante Covic makes a great diving save.

39mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Mooy gets another shot on goal but Leo Bertos was there to put the block in. The Wanderer's get the corner with halftime approaching.

33mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Fenton wins another foul after he was tripped by Mark Bridge. Phoenix's Vince Lia has made his way to the sideline to get treated for a bloody nose.

33mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Some clever play saw the Wanderers move inside the box but Paston was on hand to clean up - saving the goal with a deft kick away.

28mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Aaron Mooy gets past Fenton on the edge of the box but the Wanderers cannot make a scoring shot.

22mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Fenton feeds Huysegems who drives a powerful shot from right in front but it sails narrowly over the bar. Inches away from the opening goal!

22mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Ben Sigmund was in trouble trying to play it out of the back - Mark Paston saving the day and clearing it away.

16mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers

6mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Huysegems gets a shot away but it's off to the outside.

4mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Fenton concedes a foul for a trip on Labinot Haliti.

2mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Louis Fenton got an early touch on the edge of the box to feed Stein Huysegems but he was unable to make a shot on goal.

0mins Phoenix 0-0 Wanderers
Things are underway with the Phoenix getting first use of the ball. Conditions are cool and overcast in the capital with a good crowd on hand to cheer on the hosts.

Pre-match

Welcome to onenews.co.nz's live updates of the Wellington Phoenix's Round 16 A-League clash against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Phoenix are currently reshaping how they play, and coach Ricki Herbert's three to five-year plan to make a squad capable of winning the A-League is set to provide more inconsistency for the rest of their season.

They were excellent for 40 minutes against the Victory, then a goal against the run of play derailed them entirely.

The Wanderers were reasonable despite a 2-0 loss to Central Coast last weekend, and continue to provide a big contest for anyone they face in their debut year. No Jason Trifiro, with the midfielder suspended after his send-off. Youssouf Hersi returns from suspension and is a straight swap.

Michael Beauchamp is also back from a ban, showing the excellent depth of the fledgling club.

How will the Phoenix respond to Herbert's claims post-match last week that a team which has made the past three A-League finals series could be in for a blip this season as they reshape?

Stand by for kickoff at 4.30pm.
