Are you on the right electricity pricing rate - or are you paying to much?

Just recently electricity company Trustpower was taken to task by the Commerce Commission - fined $17,000 - for not making it clear, in some of its letters to customers, that they could be on the low usage option - and could save themselves heaps.

We had a stoush with Trustpower a couple of years ago about the low usage option and whether the company had made it clear enough to customers like 92 year old West Coaster Mavis Rogers. Trustpower said in the end it's up to the consumer to make sure they're on the right rate - the Commerce Commission's point was the power companyies need to be pro-active too.

How can you find out if you're paying too much?

Ring your power company and ask if you should be on the low usage option - this means you are using less than 8000 units a year. Going on the low user option can save you hundreds of dollars a year, especially if you are just under the 8000 unit cutoff point.

Some companies also have an easy check option on their websites.
