Lisa Hendriks was appalled to find when she was visiting her late husband's grave, that a stonemason had stamped the provisional wooden white memorial cross with his "business card". It said Headstones - Plaques - (phone number) - Massey - Auckland. She contacted her son-in-law Bruce Ellis who complained to Fair Go.
When we visited the Kumeu Anglican Cemetery we discovered all the white crosses had the same stamp. When we tracked down the stonemason, Rewa Clark of Monumental Direct Ltd in Albany, he expressed surprise that people had been offended by his touting for business. But he said he had just repainted all the crosses - at the behest of the police.
Rewa Clark has agreed to ring Bruce Ellis and apologise and he won't use the same form of advertising again. The New Zealand Monumental Masons Association tells us that their members are forbidden from advertising around graves or graveyards. Rewa Clark is not a member.
