Tamati Coffey to take sabbatical

Published: 7:40AM Friday December 07, 2012 Source: ONE News

TV ONE's Breakfast presenter Tamati Coffey has announced that he is taking a short break from television.

It was announced on Breakfast this morning that Coffey will take six months off, and is planning on taking a tour of Europe.

"Me and my partner are going to the other side of the world, so I'm going to take a bit of a sabbatical from TVNZ, and go and have some fun," Coffey said.

"I'm just after a little bit of a change, these hours on Breakfast do get to you after a while."

Coffey added that he was looking forward to spending some time with his family following the "mega year" he has had.

"The best part of it for me is that I'm starting this journey away, not only with Tim, but I'm also taking my mum and dad over to England with me," he told viewers.

TVNZ Head of News and Current Affairs Ross Dagan said that Coffey has certainly earned a holiday.

"Across six years of early starts, countless live crosses and even more wild weather, Tamati's shown a unique ability to brighten our mornings," he said.

"After a monster year highlighted by NZGT, he rightly deserves some time off to spend time with Tim and his family to recharge his batteries.

"We look forward to working with him again when he's back in New Zealand, but I'm sure he'll check in regularly with the Breakfast team while he's overseas."

As well as presenting the weather, Coffey has also been a TVNZ face for the past nine years on What Now, Dancing with the Stars, and New Zealand's Got Talent.

He will be back in the second half of 2013.

Meanwhile, Saturday Breakfast weather presenter Sam Wallace will take over weekday duties in the new year.
