Born in Whakatane in 1947, John Rowles was destined to be a
performer. His first stage appearance was at age 10 when he entered
a local talent quest and won first prize singing 'All Shook
Up'.
Moving to Auckland as a 16-year-old, John got a job as a guitar
player in a club and when the vocalist became ill he took over the
singing. Releasing his first single as a soloist in 1966, John's
career really took off in early 1968 with release in England of 'If
I Only Had Time'/'Now Is The Hour', which was a huge hit, reaching
#3 on the British charts, #6 in Australia and #2 in New
Zealand.
Returning to New Zealand, John performed at sell-out concerts as
New Zealand's biggest international star. That year, he was also
awarded the NEBOA 'Entertainer Of The Year'.
In 1969 John released the song he is most famous for, 'Cheryl
Moana Marie'. John performed worldwide, and started singing in
hotels in the USA, basing himself in Hawaii.
In1980 John was awarded the OBE for his contribution to the music
industry. Throughout the years John has continued to take centre
stage performing live and the albums have kept coming.
