Lions poised to pounce on Black Caps

Published: 12:37PM Saturday May 11, 2013 Source: ONE Sport

Hamish Rutherford's century highlighted the Black Caps' batting effort, but the tourists are facing a first-inning deficit after the second day of a four-day match against the England Lions at Leicester.

At stumps, the Lions were 219-2, trailing New Zealand by just 66 runs with eight wickets in hand - captain Joe Root was unbeaten on 105 and nightwatchman Chris Wright was yet to get off the mark.

Rutherford had early steered the Kiwis to 285 all out, compiling his knock of 126 runs off 155 balls in almost four hours. In the process, he struck 18 boundaries and four sixes.

The opener also built a 127-run partnership with former skipper Ross Taylor (35), but after he was dismissed - run out by Chris Woakes at 211-4 - the Black Caps could not find any traction and lost their final six wickets for just 74 runs.

Dean Brownlie was the next biggest contributor with 42, while wicketkeeper BJ Watling chipped in 23. For the Lions, Toby Roland-Jones took 4-54.

In response, Root and opener Michael Carberry put one 182 runs for the second wicket, before Carberry eventually fell for 77, caught Brownlie off the bowling of Bruce Martin.

Tim Southeee took the only other wicket to fall, enticing opener Varun Chopra into a catch taken by skipper Brendon McCullum for just four runs.

But McCullum also gave Root a life on 23, when he failed to take a high catch at second slip.

The Kiwi bowlers - notably frontliners Southee and Trent Boult - have also conceded 33 extras in just 59 overs.
